Aren't you afraid that barrel will rot? I think it's better to use something like this: http://www.aquabarrel.com/product_rain_barrel_complete_80gal_abe.php
I know that plastic has a bad reputation but if you only need to buy one and it lasts forever, it'll be greener than having to buy something over and over again. Wine barrels aren't made to be left outside.
Please let me know what you think.
The rain barrels we are using are actually plastic. This picture may in fact be deceptive because a lot of people artistically paint their blue plastic barrels so they look wooden.
